In one hand is held a musket-type gun.\nIt is mounted on a pile of boulders, casually fixed into place.\nThe exercises opened with a bugle call by Edward Jones.\nThe unveiling\nwas by tWO\nchildren,\nCatherine\nLena\nBoyden,\naddress\nnow\nunknown,\nand John\nAbner\nMead Hinsman,\nformer\nSpeaker of the House and now Rutland attorney who resides in Woodstock.\nThe children\nthen of preschool age became\nRutland\nHigh\nSchool\nclassmates. Mrs George F\nChaffee was in charge of the program.\nCatherine:\ndaughter of\nMayflower Colony.\nThe wreath was placed by Mrs. Anna Haviland of Glens Falls, •N.Y.,\na great-great-\ngranddaughter\nof\nCol.\nRemember Baker of the Green\nMountain Boys.\nMayor\nB.L.\nStafford\naccepted the statue for the city.\nThe prayers were by the Rev.\nJoseph Reynolds.\nDr.\nJohn\nM. Thomas,\nMiddlebury College president in his principal address spoke of the sterling\ncharacter of\nVermont men,\n\"their worthy\nancestors and their passion for the mastery of their own land and the future freedom of their children.\"\nMrs. Connie Glynn Cocklin\nunfurled the U.S. flag, letting it drave over her shoulder as the\n\"Star Spangled Banner.\nithe\nnational anthem, was sung.\nThe statue was proposed at the time by DAR regent Mrs.\nH.H.
