{"page_1": " Surnary of Pension Papers\nService:\nMassac hu setts\nBATE MAN, Joseph\nNumbers\nS. 18706\nState of Vermont )\nRutland County\nOn this 13 day of July\nA.D. 1832, personally\nSS\nappeared in open Court before the Judge of the Probato Court of Rutland District now sitting, Joseph Bateman a resident of the County of Rutland and State of Vermont, aged 72 yoars,\nwho being duly sworn according to law,\ndoth on his oath make\nthe following\ndeclaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress, passed\nJหทอ 7, 1832•\n183\nThat he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers, and served as heroin stated.\n& served in Col.\nCapt. Oliver Root, It. Clark, Lt. Newell, Ensign\nHe marched to the City of New York where ho\nwas when Independence was\nHe was at New York when it was taken by the Bristish and retreated to\nHarlem (?) Bights - was discharged at Groton bridge when his time was out.\nIn 1777 he served one month as a volunteer at Albany under Capt. Sloan. attached to any Regt. - this was in April.\nsame year he volunteered\nand served in Capt. Grover's Company, Col. Simond's Regt. three weeks. marched to Manchester and Pawlet & were discharged at Manchester at Col. Warner's headquarters.\nIn August of the sam year he volunteered and served in Capt. Wim.\nDouglas' Company, Col. Simond's Rogt.\nMarched to Pawlet,\nWhi tohall & joined the\nArny under General Gatos at Stillwater & was dismissed at Stillwater about October\nhaving served six weeks as Corporal.\nThe whole company was discharged at the\nThe year after Burgoyne was taken he onlisted at lancock for three months and served as Corporal to Capt. Bemis\nCompany,\nCol. Chapin's Regt.\nand rendezvoused\nat Claverack (now Hudson), then marched to Albany wharo he was dismissed.\nHolman and Carey's (?) were at New York in 177\nCols\nof last figure). Genl. Washington,\nHe has no documentary\nevidence, & knows of no person whose testimony he can procure who can testify to his services.\nHe never roceived a written discharge.\nBe was born in Killingly, Connecticut, the 20 Dec. 1759. there.\nHis age was recorded\nSince the\nRevolution he has resided in Hancock, Little White Crook.\nCame\nto Vernont about 40 years ago & has lived in Middletown, Poultney, & Rutland - he now lives in the latter place where he has lived about twelve years.\nhe is\nmown\nto Revs. Walke:\nProctor & Rice, Clergymen & to most of the\nof Mi11 Vil1age.\nannabitants\n(Signed) Joseph Bateman\nSworn to and Subscribed (Signed) (looks like \"R-Roger Rigs\")\nJoseph Bateman - 2\nThe foregoing is a verbatim copy, so far as is humanly possible, of Joseph original application for a pension.\nThe rest of the papers are briefed.\nnurac hed to above 8001c8 tron\nis an affidavit signed by\nRev. ladley Proctor\nand Francis Slason both of Rutland,\nwho certify that they are both well ao-\nquainted with Joseph bateman and\nbelleve that all statemnts made in the above\napplication are true\nand that ho was a Soldier of the Revolution which opinion\nas concurrea\nin oy the neignbornood in wich he lives.\nA poper unsigned and not dated is as follows;\n\"Josoph Butenan of Rutland in the State Vermont was placed on the pension roll under\nthe act of 7th June 1832 and subsequently for some reason not\nnow known his name was stricken from the rolls.\n\"Tha addidavit of Zadock Bateman a Pensioner of the United States under Act\no1 len dune, 1004, is herewith presented in the hope that it may be deemed sufficient proof of service when added to that which has heretofore been furnished to cause his name to be restored to the list.\n\"Joseph Bateman died in 1841. His widow still survives. If the proof herewith presented shall be deemed sufficient,\nthe claim will hereafter be\nprosecuted for the amount due on his account under the Act of 7th June, 1832, and also in the right of his widow.\"\nThe affidavit of Zadock Bateman mentioned above was made before a Justice of the Peace of Cayuga County,\nN. Yo\nUnder oath he\nstates that he well\nrecollects that in the year 1776 Joseph Bateman\n\"fitted out for the American\nArmy\"from his fathar's residence in the town of Hancock, Berkshire County,\nnassachuserus.\ndestined for New York. That news was received at home that\nwhan the British Army took possession of New York, Joseph Bateman was on guard\nand was compelled to escape in\nsuch haste when the guard was taken off by\nGen. Putnam that ha abandoned his pack and just missed being surrounded and his father on receiving the news went immediately to the Army to carry him another change of clothing eto.\nHe remembered\nJoseph's\ngoing to Albany and\nat another time to\nMand he ster,\nVt.,\nand it is his conviction that Joseph B.\nserved as a Revolutionary Soldier five tarms.\nThis affidavit was signed by Zadock Bateman on the 8th of January 1840, proper ly cortified by E.W. Bataman J. P. and officially sealed.\nA letter headed Rutland, t., Feb. 10, 1835, and signed by Joseph Bateman, should have been insertod before the last two items:\n\"Dear Sir:\nThe names of the officers who I served under were Brig. General\nFellows.\nSheffield(?), Col. Jonathan Smith of Lanesboro,\nCapt. Oliver Root,\nPittsfield,\nSaml. Clark, Williamstown,lst Liout.\nNewell of Lanesboro,\n2d Lieut.
