{"page_1": " OLD COBBLER'S SHOP\nThe land on which you are now standing was Major Abel Moulton's\npitch, who came to Castleton in 1771 and built a log cabin store.\nwas fron this store that the Allen Brothers and Remember Baker bought their supplies when they were marking the Onion River road to Castleton, and where Ira Allen and Remember Baker surveyed the north line of the Town of Castleton and the Allen lots in Hubbardton. Abel. Moulton died of smallpox in 1776. His widow married Nehemiah Hoit, who was the third man to enter Fort Ticonderoga at the time of its capture by Ebhan Allen.\nThe Moulton's trame house, which was built in 1774, was purchased by Deacon Merrill who lived in it for over sixty years. Before buying the frame house Deacon Merrill bought the land on which he built his brick cobbler's shop. One of the interesting features of the shop is that the brick is laid in running bond rather than in the more popular Flemish bond of that period.\nFour years before Washington was inaugurated President, and six years before Vermont was admitted to the Union, this cobbler's shop was used by the settlers of the community•\nThe following is about Enos Merrill from Steele's History of\n\"Fron time to time there were many young men in his family, apprentices to the trade of tanning and shoe maling.\nThey were required to be present at family prayers, to pay a strict regard to the Sabbath; and most of them became pious while in his employ; and several of them, turning aside from the trade, became ministers of the Gospel.\nHe was a model of regularity in all social and religious matters.\"\nThe restoration of this interesting old building is the main project of the Castleton Historical Society.
